Safe to spend

Know what’s safe to spend before payday

Your checking balance isn’t the money you can spend. Rent, subscriptions and savings are already spoken for. Pennyjay takes them out first and shows what’s left until your next paycheck, then shows exactly how it got there.

How it works

  1. Start from what you can spend

Pennyjay adds up the available balance in your spending accounts. You choose which accounts count.

  2. Take out what’s already committed

Bills and subscriptions due before your next payday come off first, then the savings you planned for your goals, then a small buffer.

  3. Look ahead to payday

You get one number and a projected balance line through your next paycheck, with the forecast drawn dashed so you can tell it from what already happened.

The details

Paydays found for you

Pennyjay finds your paychecks in your transactions, including more than one income and pay that varies. You can set or change your payday any time.

No paycheck? Still useful

Every line of the math

“How Jay got there” lists your spendable balance, bills before payday, planned savings and buffer, so the number is never a mystery.

A heads-up before it gets tight

If your projected balance is on track to dip below your threshold, Pennyjay tells you before it happens.

Questions

How is safe to spend calculated?

Spendable balance, minus bills and subscriptions due before your next payday, minus the savings you planned for your goals, minus a small buffer.

Does it work with irregular or multiple incomes?

Yes. Pennyjay detects more than one income and pay that varies, and you can override the payday it uses. Without a payday it looks 14 days ahead.

Which accounts count toward it?

By default, your open checking accounts. You can pick the spending accounts yourself.
